Friend and director Whit MacLaughlin is working on a new play called “Batch,” slated to open at Actors Theater of Louisville on March 21. Whit is artistic director of New Paradise Laboratories, an experimental theater company based in Philly, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with him on various projects over the past few years. I got to see the workshop of “Batch” at Drexel University last fall, which makes me sure that the ATL incarnation will ROCK, but Philadelphia won’t get the “Batch” experience until this fall, when the work appears in the Philly Fringe. In the meantime, I’m chuckling over his description of the process of play development for the current piece: “You take the normal process of working on a play and feed it steroids and psychedelic mushrooms and videotape it …and then play it back with feedback.” Whit, Albert Innaurato and I are scheming up a new project for later this spring; sounds like we’ll all have our hands full.
