The head of the National Endowment of the Arts, Dana Gioia, spoke truth when he delivered the graduation address at Stanford University earlier this spring. Among his comments:
Art addresses us in the fullness of our being—simultaneously speaking to our intellect, emotions, intuition, imagination, memory, and physical senses. There are some truths about life that can be expressed only as stories, or songs, or images.
It’s worth it to take a few minutes to read the whole text of his speech. As for me, I’m off to express some more truths about life.
A Video Trove

Here’s a remarkable find: a collection of historic musical theater video clips compiled by someone with a lot of spare time and an understanding of the “fair use” provision of the copyright law. Broadway geeks like yours truly will find this a wonderful place to waste an hour or two. Don’t be surprised if a few of these show up in class, too. I’m tring to figure out the code to embed the video player and put a clip in this post, but it keeps busting the format of the page; there’s another way to waste a few hours in geekland.
