Gertrude Stein and Basket

Here’s Basket’s famous ancestor, a white standard poodle that belonged to Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas. According to accounts, Stein’s Basket had his own toothbrush and Miss Stein brushed his teeth every day. His Philadelphia namesake spent a good week, and seems to be coming out of his shell. In the morning, he accompanies us to Black and Brew, where we buy a coffee and bagel to fortify us for our matutinal walkabout. He walks nicely on a leash and cavorts happily with the other dogs at the Columbus dog park up the street. D’Arcy picked up a copy of “Dog Training for Dummies” today, but she’s no dummy; she’s one smart, compassionate cookie, and the pooch is blossoming in her care.
Basket Case

Meet the newest resident at Club 1818 – a white standard poodle named “Basket.” We got him today from an animal rescue in Lancaster County. He’s 8 months old, very shy, and completely overwhelmed by his new surroundings – pretty much a basket case at the moment, I fear! Still, we have high hopes that with a few days of TLC he’ll settle in to his new home. If not, I’ll be a basket case too!
