Have A Little Faith, from A Tiny Miracle (Day 24)

A Tiny Miracle coverThe song “Have A Little Faith” from “A Tiny Miracle” is my 24th offering of Project 194. A Tiny Miracle is a holiday musical about a little evergreen seedling that never grew big because it was planted in the shade of a big oak. The Little Tree can’t help but wonder why he isn’t growing bigger like all the other trees, and the Wise Oak reassures the little tree that there’s no need to worry. In other words, it’s not just a holiday story; “A Tiny Miracle” is a parable about finding your purpose, and that makes it meaningful year-round. My father and his wife bought Richard Wainwright’s book from the author at a book fair as a gift for our son Alex, and it stirred something in me the moment from I first read it. The incomparable Joilet Harris is the lead singer on this track.

Have a little faith.
There’s nothing lives in vain.
Your purpose will be plain in time.
Have a little faith.
There’s lots of ways to grow,
But it takes time to know
Before you’ll see
Your destiny.

Each of us is a kind of miracle,
A precious gift to share.
Even you are a tiny miracle
And it takes time to see
What kind of miracle you were meant to be.

There’s a spark of life
That sleeps in every seed
But time is what they need to bloom.
Little drops of rain
May not know why they fall
But though they’re only small
They fill the sea eventually.

Each of them is a kind of miracle,
A precious gift to share.
Even you are a tiny miracle
Don’t let yourself lose heart
You can’t tell when the miracle will start!

A single flake of snow can start an avalanche,
One root, alone, can split a stone in two,
And little acorns grow to be
Majestic oaks eventually.
Although you may be small,
There’s big things you can do!

Each of us is a kind of miracle,
A precious gift to share.
Even you are a tiny miracle
And it takes time to see
What kind of miracle you are meant to be.

Listen to the trees,
Take it easy, please.
Have a little faith.

Navigating this 194 day challenge is a bit like driving at night, when you can only see as far as the beam of your headlights reveals. I considered making a “master plan” with a calendar of song choices, but so far I’ve been choosing on an impromptu basis. I knew in an instant when I thought of this song that it had to be next.

Believe it or not, the question of what kind of miracle I am meant to be is one I live with every day. I feel fortunate to have been able to contribute as much as I did in my administrative position at UArts, but living my life as a former Director, I wonder, was that it? Was that my big moment? And what about this songwriter thing that I’ve spent so many hours on, lavished such care and patient nurture on? Will I get to see it bloom and grow, more than it has already? A Tiny Miracle is a beautiful, inspiring story with wonderful songs, and it’s just one of my past projects that I’d love to see reach a bigger audience. Meanwhile, I try to take comfort in its message of faith: hang in there, it takes time to grow, your purpose will be plain in time.

Day 6 of the Your Turn Challenge prompts me to tell you about a time when I surprised myself. Sometimes I have the experience of a song appearing all by itself, and that’s a surprising and astonishing occurrence when it happens. As recently as a couple evenings ago, I sat down at the piano and began to noodle, and before long, a melody began to take shape under my fingers. Writing it into my notebook was sort of like taking dictation, it declared itself so vividly to me. And the weird thing was, it was not a tune that has any obvious usefulness to any of the projects I’m working on, it’s just a terrific old-fashioned pop tune with a Latin feel that showed up! (Learn more about it in my Day 25 post!)
