Closer To Our Dreams, from Leading Lady (Day 134)

Today’s song was heard in the first reading of Leading Lady, and is sung most beguilingly by Brendan Dalton. His charming performance didn’t prevent us from discovering that this was the wrong song for this moment in the play.

In our story, Mae and Frank are working together as leading man and leading lady in a theater in Brooklyn when Mae receives as offer to star in a touring production. It’s a wonderful opportunity, but there’s a catch: it means leaving her husband and her family to go on the road. What matters more, family or success? Mae is hesitant, but Frank, always attuned to success, urges her to take the gig.

Eventually, I wrote a song for Mae for this moment called My Name Above The Title, and you can click thru to hear it next and decide which one YOU think is the better choice!

FRANK: Not to have you near me will be terrible
But it will be bearable
As long as I know
That it brings us closer to our dreams.

(Mae: No darling, say you’ll come along with me, I need ya, I’d be lost without you and my boys.)

I can give the boys a kiss goodnight for you
Would that be all right with you?
I’ll keep up the show
It will bring us closer to our dreams.

The boys won’t miss their mama
Not at their tender age
Mary, save the drama for the stage

(Mae: I can’t do it. They won’t know me out there in those big cities.)

Darling, I am sure this choice is right for you
The future is bright for you
Just see how it gleams!
Though we’ll be apart
It won’t break your heart
If it brings us closer to our dreams.

[with more urgency]
What’s to discuss, Mary?
Do it for us!
Why make a fuss, Mary?
Do it for us!
We’ve hoped and we’ve prayed
For this kind of a break.
Mary, how could it be a mistake?
When you get such an offer, you take!

(Mae: But what will you do? When will we be together again?)

There’s a million reasons for you not to go
But Mary you’ve got to go
That’s just how it seems
Though we’ll be apart
It won’t break your heart
If it brings us closer to our dreams.
