Project 194, Day 10: One Big Family

The view from my window this morning shows the towers of Tribeca rather than my South Philly backyard, and I’m feeling a little nostalgic for home as I listen to today’s selection. It’s an anthem to South Philly that I wrote for the second version of Gemini the Musical in 2007, One Big Family. As you listen to me sing on this composer’s demo, imagine the tune played by a string band strutting up Broad Street on New Years Day!

One big family
That’s how it is in my South Philly.
We kiss, we cuss,
We kick up a fuss,
But if you’re from the neighborhood
Then you’re one of us.
One big family —
If we stick together, nothing can go wrong,
And though you roam,
You’ll always have a home.
In South Philly, you belong!

Lately, the Geminiani family’s a hundred percent bigger…
My son’s come home to my South Philly.
He’s back for summer break —
Yo, Francis! You awake?
Sometimes his fuckin’ atty-tood’s
A little hard to take,
But we’re one big family,
And this breakfast ought to help him rise and shine!
Two eggs
With toast,
Some strong espresso roast, and…

[Fran goes into the street and sees a neighbor on the way to the store.]

Yo, Pooch!
Let’s get together, watch the fight,
Play some cards on Friday night,
All right?

Hey, Nino!
I need a quart of milk, okay?
And what’s the number for today?
No way!

The cops, the whores
The stevedores
Everybody we meet in the streets and the stores
Is one big family.

The doo-wop group,
The opera star
The crooner singin’ at the local bar
All live in harmony.

Look, there goes crazy Tom
Just back from Vietnam
And Ezio, the hairdresser
Who still lives with his mom.
A kid chased by a nun…
Boy, watch that sister run!
South Philly has to be
The perfect place to raise a son!

From Third and Shunk
To West Passyunk
As far as the eye can see,
It don’t matter which
Every son of a bitch
Is a paisan’ to me!

The plumbers,
The drummers,
The mummers!
We’re one big family
That’s how it is in my South Philly.
We kiss, we cuss,
We kick up a fuss
But if you’re from the neighborhood
Then you’re one of us.

One big family —
If we stick together, nothing can go wrong,
And though you roam,
You’ll always have a home.
In South Philly, you belong!
