Change The World, from Realities (Day 17)

The third song in the musical Realities is Alex’s “I Want” song, Change The World. (The first two, if you missed them, are What A Trip and The Man’s A Riddle.) In this anthem, he tries persuade the skeptical Anna about the importance of the technology he is building and his vision for how it can “change the world.”

How can you judge the program?
You haven’t seen it yet.
And once you have, you won’t be so contemptuous, I bet.
You think it’s superficial,
Some gadget I’ve contrived.
But ever since the accident,
This hardware is the reason I survived.

It isn’t just a clever game,
Meant only to amuse,
It’s a powerful technology that anyone can use.
Forget about your prejudice
And see the broader view:
With virtual reality,
There’s virtually nothing you can’t do!

Did you ever want to change the world?
Well, I finally found a way!
I invented this to change the world!
Look, I know it’s strange, but trust me when I say
The body is a prison but I think I found the key.
Reality can’t hurt you if it’s virtual,
It sets you free!
Just try it and you’ll see.
This technology has changed the world for me.

Think of what it means to the scientist,
Probing secrets at the atom’s core.
Think of what it means to the traveler,
Finding endless new worlds to explore.
Never mind the limits of the body,
Never mind the boundaries we know.
In cyberspace, there’s not a place the human race can’t learn to go!

Did you ever want to change the world?
Well, I finally found the way!
I invented this to change the world!
Look, I know it’s strange, but trust me when I say
The body is a prison but I think I found the key.
Reality can’t hurt you if it’s virtual,
It sets you free!
Just try it and you’ll see.
If you took a closer look, then you’d agree.
Maybe you would like to change the world with me.

Well, is it any wonder that Anna is captivated by Alex’s fervor? Their relationship soon begins to change, as Cybil observes in the next song, “The Man’s A Riddle (Reprise)”:

The man’s a riddle, he’s hard to predict.
Can it be Alex and Anna have clicked?
Once she discovers how difficult our boss is,
I bet she cuts her losses and gets out of his life.
She’s messing in his head in ways I don’t understand.
It’s almost like she’s got him eating out of her hand.
And what she’s got him eating is just out of control:
Last night he asked for seconds of her tofu-lentil casserole!

Heigh-ho! Hey diddle diddle! The man is a riddle.

Will Anna’s regimen of physical therapy, healthy eating and kindness bring about a change in Alex’s condition? Will Cybil’s “catch,” Karney, produce some investors that can provide an infusion of cash for Alex’s struggling tech venture? You’ll have to wait for Day 18’s post for the answers to those questions!
